The principal and owner of the company is Tony Dod a programmer/statistician, previously an Experimental Scientist in the Division of Minerals and Geochemistry, CSIRO.

The company was established in January 1987 to provide computer based services to Geochemex Australia specifically orientated towards multi-commodity mineral exploration.

Dataplot has since developed into a stand alone computing bureau offering computing services to a wide range of clients from individuals to multi-national companies to suit their needs.
